So, my mother in-law invited us for an early morning dim sum together with my father in-law. Dim sum is one of Chinese’s favorite breakfast. Kaya will call is as a premium breakfast since many of the dim sum restaurants have raised its prices since the prices of petrol, sugar and recently the purported water rate hike and God knows what else more. Some dim sum restaurant maintained the quality of their offerings but some reduced their quality despite the price increase.  We chose Dian Xin Zhi Jia because of its affordable prices. Taste wise? Read on. 😛

We reached Dian Xin Zhi Jia quite early at 6:45am. Not many customers yet. Dian Xin Zhi Jia has another branch at Macalister Road called The Town Steamboat Restaurant that does dim sum in the morning and steamboat at night but it was empty when we reached there. So, we opt for Dian Xin Zhi Jia opposite KDU College.

Here’s the interior of the dim sum restaurant. The space is very big. Even so, it is very pack during their peak hours which are around 9am – 11am++ especially weekends. So, be there early if you don’t want to waste time searching for parking and also standing beside a table just to wait for someone else to finish and leave the table.

They offer two types of ordering method. One is self-service whereby you go to the counters to get your dim sum. Oh ya, Dim Sum House does not practise card system, so you don’t have to bring a card to order your dim sum. There will be people who are in-charge to calculate and take payment from you. Quite good you know.

The second type is the more traditional way which is the push-cart method. The ladies will be pushing a push-cart around to let the customers to order their own favorite dim sums.

Most people are used to self-ordering thanks to fast food restaurants such as Mc Donald’s and so on. So, most people will just go to the counter and pick their own dim sums.

KayaButter noticed that Dian Xin Zhi Jia is very customer friendly by offering a special counter just for take-aways. Good job there since many people loves to take-away. Just see the excitement of drive-through for fast food restaurants. Haha 🙂

To refill the teapot with hot water, they have a dedicated place to refill which is at the farthest left, near to the washrooms. Do not touch the machine to avoid scaling.

Good but not as good as the one we had at Maxim Restaurant. The prawns are fresh though. 🙂

Hong Kong Chee Cheong Fun

KayaButter are big fans of Hong Kong Chee Cheong Fun. We always order this dish whenever we go to any dim sum restaurant. We are disappointed with this dish. The prawns are not fresh, juicy and big. The prawns look ‘pale’. And the chee cheong fun is not springy and too thick. The chili paste is also not that tasty.

Char Hor Fun

A bit disappointment. The whole dish is not well cooked and lacked taste. The fried part of the fish looks and tastes good but once you bite it, you will know that it is not fresh and juicy at all. Just an average dish to our liking. Butter’s mum complained that the egg is not well dispersed.

Kaya with his naughty look.

For all the dim sums that we ordered and the char hor fun and the tea, the total cost is RM35. Quite cheap KayaButter would say. Overall, the taste of the dim sums are rather average. The best dim sim restaurant in our opinion goes to Maxim Dim Sum Restaurant at Taman Pekaka, Sungai Dua. We just loved its dim sum especially har gau, Hong Kong chee cheong fun and Shang Mee. Despite that, the price of the dim sum is very reasonable and we suspect that’s one of the reason it attracts many loyal customers. Definitely one of the cheapest dim sum restaurant in Penang. 😉

  1. Where did you park your car? Free parking for customers? 🙂

    • kaya says:

You can park behind the restaurant. No free parking. There will be a parking attendant that collects RM1 if they don’t increase it. Hope this helps. 🙂
