Invited Review: Sweet-I, 甜在心糖水屋 Tong Shui @ Jalan Sungai Dua, Penang.

Sweet-I Review (20)

Recently, I have been invited to review a desserts shop called Sweet-I. It has been a while that I attend food review due to my workload. This time is to release some stress. Do you realise that DESSERTS are the ultimate solution for you if you are STRESSED? DESSERTS is STRESSED spelt backward.

So, let’s get ready for some desserts!

A bit of histroy about this shop. Five years ago, owners of Sweet-I sell their famous desserts at a make shift stall at Jalan Helang, Gelugor before moving into this shop. Guess that their desserts are selling very good. 🙂  The owners are a husband and wife tag team. And they loved traditional Chinese desserts or tong shui in Cantonese.

Sweet-I, 甜在心糖水屋 is famous for the no preservative agent and  coloring agent in their tong shui. And the tong shui are mostly vegetarian. And best of all, their tong shui are low sugar. So. diabetics, you can come over here to enjoy your delicious bowl of tong shui.

Sweet-I Review (19)

Their menus are hand written on the wall of shop.

Sweet-I Review (18)

Here are all the tong shui. The owners cannot prepare all the tong shui listed in the menu because it’s based on what the owners can buy at the market. So, if you wish to have your favorite tong shui without being disappointed, call them first.

Sweet-I Review (17)

Now, le’t get over the histroy and enjoy all the delicious tong shui.

Sweet-I Review (16)

Green Bean Sago Sweet Potato Soup (番薯西谷米绿豆沙) – RM2.70 (each packet), RM3.00 (each container).

Sweet-I Review (15)

Black Glutinous Rice (Bubur Pulut Hitam) (黑糯米粥) – RM2.00 (each packet), RM2.30 (each container).

Sweet-I Review (14)

Sha Shen (Glehnia Rooi), Red Dates, Medlar, White Fungus, Winter Melon Soup (糖炒参冬瓜红枣枸杞雪耳) – RM4.50 (each packet), RM4.80 (each container). Good for body heat.

Sweet-I Review (13)

Pumpkin Sago Glutinoous Rice in Coconut Milk (南瓜诺密椰香西米露) – RM3.00 (each packet), RM3.30 (each container).

Sweet-I Review (12)

Black Sesame Soup – RM4.00 (each packet). One of the owners recommendation. It took the owner, Mr Soon, 4 years to perfect the art of making this tong shui. Should give it a try although it might not be your taste. 😛

Sweet-I Review (11)

Lily Bulbs, Red Dates Fungus Coralline Algae (海燕窝百合红枣雪耳露) – RM4.50 (each packet), RM4.80 (each container). This helps your insomnia and improves blood circulation.

Sweet-I Review (10)

Tapioca Jelly BoboChaCha (香草薯粉条麽麽喳喳) – RM2.70 (each packet), RM3.00 (each container). There’s sweet potatoes, carrot, yam and green jelly in coconut milk.

Sweet-I Review (9)

Ginger Dates Coralline Algae (姜枣海燕窝)- RM3.50 (each packet), RM3.80 (each container). Good for your body but a bit bitter. Bitter is always healthier, right?

Sweet-I Review (8)

Kelp Red Bean Cream Soup (生磨海带红豆湖) – RM3.00 (each packet), RM3.30 (each container). Something special. If you are a fan of seaweed, you should give it a try.

Sweet-I Review (7)

Groundnut Cream Soup(生磨香甜花生糊) – RM3.00 (each packet), RM3.30 (each container). Peanut lovers, this is your heaven! Smooth and delicious.

Sweet-I Review (6)

Tapioca Jelly Bobo Cha Cha with shaved ice (香草薯粉条麽麽喳喳) – RM2.70 (each packet), RM3.00 (each container). Very refreshing and cooling. A nice twist to the traditional bobo cha cha. Still, I prefer the road side shaved ice bubur cha cha at Mount Erskine Road.

Sweet-I Review (5)

Barley White Fungus Fu-Zhuk Soup (薏米雪耳腐竹) – RM2.50 (each packet), RM2.80 (each container). Add RM1.00 for Gingko. This is a must try. Very smooth and the white fungus tasted like jelly.

Sweet-I Review (4)

Lotus Seeds Gingko Nut Red Bean Soup (莲子白果陈皮红豆沙) – RM3.30 (each packet), RM3.60 (each container).

Sweet-I Review (3)

黑豆山药糙米粥 (黑豆, 山药, 莲子,海带,香菇,南瓜) 全天然,无味精! RM4.50. This is the special one. Combination of all good things in one bowl of porridge. Very nutritious. Add the sesame oil and it will taste even better.

Sweet-I Review (2) Sweet-I Review (1)

夏枯草桑叶菊花茶 Prunella, Mulberry and Chrysanthemum Tea – RM2.00, this type of herbal tea is specially designed for those with heaty and hot body.

枣仁菊花龙眼茶 Zaoren Chrysanthemum and Longan Tea – RM3.50, is for those that having insomnia or body cold to drink.

Overall, the tong shui are good and healthy. They tasted less sweet and have no artificial stuffs in them. It’s a great place to satisfy your sudden hunger for tong shui or when you are over STRESSED, head over to Sweet-I, 甜在心糖水屋.

A few things to note. There’s no air condition, so it might get a bit too hot sometimes, especially when there are a lot of people. The dining space is a bit small and crowded, so be prepared. Anyhow, all these do not matter when you meet the owners in person. They are so down to earth, humble and honest people. All shortcomings of the shop becomes secondary when you understand how sincere and how hard they do to prepare the tong shui.
