Little Nyona 小娘惹 @ Queensbay Mall, Penang (1)

This is one of the latest addition to the restaurants and food franchises that are available in Penang’s largest shopping mall, Queensbay Mall (QBM). It is not very new since The Little Nyonya Cuisine (TLNC) 小娘惹 has been around in Penang for many months already but new in the sense that TLNC 小娘惹 is a rather new face in QBM food scene. They even have a branch in Gurney Plaza’s basement also. KayaButter wanted to try this outlet for a long time already but the fate is not there! 😛 They have Axian, the famous Malaysian food introducer as their shop ambassador!

TLNC 小娘惹 takes the name of a very famous Singaporean drama that has a huge following among the South Asians especially in Penang, Malacca and Singapore as these places have a lot of Baba & Nyonya people. The Babas & Nyonyas are also called as Straits-born Chinese. Their food is called Nyonya food which has the fusion of Chinese, Malay, Indonesia and also Thai cooking style. Nyonya cooking is a dying trade as not many people know how to cook Nyonya food anymore. So, we need to create more awareness for Nyonya food.

Since the space inside the outlet is rather small, they extended their space into the outside of outlet. By the time KayaButter reach with my mum and aunt, the tables inside the outlet is full already. We chose the open air tables. 🙂

What being displayed outside their outlet looks very tempting and nice! Kaya guesses that these are their signature dishes. 🙂

A rather grand looking menu but has become a bit rugged after being used so many times.

Black Pepper Chicken Butter Rice RM10.80

This is what Butter has ordered. The butter rice is damn buttery and smells good. Definitely good to enhance your appetite. The chicken surprising is tender and has a deep black pepper taste in its meat. Very well cooked black pepper chicken! Butter loves this dish a lot and surprisingly Butter manage to finish the whole plate by herself. No doubt that she is also very hungry at that time but the combination of black pepper chicken and butter rice is awesome! The portion of the rice is rather big also.

Sambal Petai Prawn Rice RM10.80

Kaya’s aunt ordered this and overall it is good! The flavor is very thick and the gravy is very very nice! It is not too spicy and the sambal tastes better than the one Kaya had for his Nasi Lemak Special. They take away some of the skin of the prawn and it really helps to ease our effort in eating the prawn.

Nasi Lemak Special RM8.80

Kaya who is feeling rather old-school that day chose the least adventurous dish which is our Malaysian staple food, Nasi Lemak Special, a fragrant coconut milk rice with dried anchovies, hard-boiled egg, fried chicken and sambal gravy. This dish is definitely better than the one in Old Town White Coffee! This dish does not disappoint. Everything is good and nothing to complain about.

Overall, this is one of the restaurants that KayaButter will go back if we are looking for something good, affordable and comfortable to eat. The flavors of the food are strong and suits our taste buds. We might come back to Little Nyonya 小娘惹 to try out their other dishes! 🙂
