Sawadee Krap! This is the month whereby many people will get wet as the Thais celebrate Songkran Festival. In conjunction with this celebration, Eastin Hotel Penang is organising a Thai-theme buffet called Songkran Sawadee Pee Mai featuring many mouth-watering Thai delicacies. Let’s start with the Soups & Appetisers.

Soups & Appetisers

Lab Gai (Spicy Minced Chicken Salad with Roasted Rice and Chili Powder)Yam Hua Plee Sai Goong (Banana Flower Spicy Salad with Glass Noodles) and Yam Talay (Spicy Seafood Salad with Fresh Herbs and Lime Spicy Dressing)

There are a few choices for you to choose from for your appetiser. The Yam Hua Plee Sai Goong (Banana Flower Spicy Salad with Glass Noodles) received rave reviews from many bloggers for its springy glass noodles and refreshing effects. 🙂

Tom Yam Goong (Spicy Prawn Soup with Lemongrass and Galangal Lime Juice)

Tom Yam is synonymous to Thai food just as nasi lemak is to Malaysian food. The prawns served are fresh. We find that the soup is somewhat lacking the ‘oomph‘ that we always look for in a good Tom Yam.

Geang Juide Mara Sai Gai (Brittle Ground Soup with Chicken)

This is another less spicier soup that is offered for those who are heat-intolerant. It tastes almost like the pork belly soup that we usually have but don’t worry, my Muslim readers, this soup is halal. It is a tad bit spicy due to the presence of generous amount of pepper.

Main Dishes

Kao Phad Poo – Fried Steamed Rice with Crab Meat

Rice is something that Malaysian can’t live without especially when you are eating Thai food. Imagine eating all the delicious Thai dishes but without rice. Definitely potong stim, right? The rice served is cooked using steam. Hence, the rice is a bit softer than the usual ones. 🙂

Tao Hoo Lod Phad Khuenchaiy – Stir-Fried Tofu with Celery and Oyster Sauce

This is a MUST-TRY dish of the buffet! Kaya had 2 servings of these tasty stir-fried tofus. The skin of the tofu is not too hard and the inner part is so soft and almost melts in my mouth. The oyster sauce helps to make the tofu more flavourful and has a hint of sweet ending that makes this dishes even more alluring. 🙂

Pla Kapong Phad Khuenchaiy (Stir Fried Snapper with Celery & Oyster Sauce)

Kaya feels that he has a thing about oyster sauce. It always reminds him of the chicken rice at So Yong cafe in Batu Lanchang that he had when he was small. The fish is well fried and has a crispy skin yet soft in the inside. The oyster sauce definitely helps to make things more flavourful and sweeter.

Geang Keaw Whan Gai – Chicken Green Curry with Eggplants and Basil

This is another recommended dish! The green curry is what we look for a good bowl of green curry! The gravy is thick and flavourful and the eggplants go well with the chicken and gravy. The chicken meat is tender and in bite size.

Phad Preaw Whan Talay (Crispy Seafood with Sweet & Sour Sauce)

Kaya is a big fan of sweet and sour dishes and he finds that it goes very well with crispy stuffs. This is also another dish that will make you take more of it. A very well done dish. We guess that the crispiness of the seafood, the sweetness from seafood and the sauce and the additional sourish taste help to tantalise our taste bud. 🙂

Phat Khi Mao Kai (Spicy Stir Fried Minced Chicken with Basil)

This is our all-time favourite. A very well done dish. The minced chicken is very good and the sauce is flavourful and complements well with the the minced chicken.

Desserts

Packthong Sangkaya (Steamed Egg Custard in Pumpkin)

This is our second time trying this Thai dessert. It looked very inviting and colourful. Taste-wise, it is also very nice with the smoothness of the custard.

Kao Neaw Mamuang (Mango Sticky Rice)

This is also another dish that will make people quickly recognise it as a Thai food. The dessert is decent and the mangoes are sweet. What we feel that Eastin Hotel Penang has done it right is that it comes in bite-size. It is a very wise move as many patrons will be quite full after the tasty main courses and appetisers and they will definitely appreciate this mini size dessert. 🙂

Sakhuu Piak Maphrao Awn (Tapioca Pearls Pudding with Young Coconut Flesh)

Another dessert that you must not nice. If you are a big fan of the bubbles in bubble tea, then this is a must-try! KayaButter loves the fragrance and sweetness of the gula Melaka and the chewy feeling of the tapioca pearls. A very good combination indeed 🙂

Tab Tim Krob (Water Chestnut with Jackfruit in Coconut Ice Syrup)

Eastin Hotel Penang is really good with its desserts. Butter is of full praise for Eastin Hotel Penang’s desserts. The water chestnut helps to make the tasting experience better and combine it with the sweetness of jackfruit and the fragrance of coconut and top it with the ice shavings, the effect is heavenly. 🙂
