Eastin Hotel Penang May 2014 Buffet Theme – Greek Grandeur!
For the month of May 2014, Eastin Hotel Penang’s Swez Brasserie is introducing Greek Grandeur as its buffet theme. This is definitely a bold move by the Eastin Hotel Penang management to introduce Greek cuisine to Penangnites! That’s definitely a fresh and novel culinary experience for us! KayaButter have never tried before Greek food, so definitely KayaButter will be reviewing the food using our localized taste buds. ๐ The appetizers, main courses and desserts are the highlight for Eastin Hotel Penang’s May Buffet theme – Greek Grandeur. And fret not if you are not a big fan of Greek food, there will be local cuisines provided in the buffet too. ๐
Appetizers and Soup:
Garides Saganaki (Shrimp with Tomaotes & Feta)
This appetizer definitely stands out because of the shrimp and feta cheese. Definitely a good choice to ‘warm up’ your appetite. The combination of the sweetness from the shrimp and the sourness of feta cheese is inviting. ๐
Classic Greek Salad
A very commonly found salad in Greek which consists of olives, cucumber and capsicum and etc. KayaButter cannot accept the taste of olive. It is very sour and makes our body squirm. Haha ๐ As one of the staff there told us, enjoying olive is an acquired taste and we agreed whole-heartedly.
Greek Mezze Platter
This is also one of the common dish that is found in Greece. It is served for those who are looking for a quick meal. For Eastin Hotel Penang’s version, there is an assorted vegetables and crispy tortilla with three kind of dipping sauces to choose from, namely yoghurt tuna, cheesy dressing and curry mayo. This is definitely a very healthy choice of finger food. The crispy tortilla is very addictive especially when you dip it into the dipping sauces. ๐ The leafy item in the platter is what KayaButter call as the Greek version of sushi. Haha. Too bad they used risotto which gives it a rather soft and sticky taste.
Avgolemono (Greek Chicken Soup with Egg Lemon Sauce)
This is one of KayaButter’s favorite. Although it is a chicken soup but it tasted like mushroom soup to us. Very soothing and nice after-taste. ๐ The taste of lemon sauce is not too strong because little amount is added into the soup after it is cooked.
Main Courses:
Greek Beef Bifteki
This dish is very yummy! Crispy at the outside and soft in the inside. Although it is a beef, it is not tough. The cheese inside it enhances the flavor. Definitely, you will go back to take more after trying this. ๐
Classic Greek Moussaka with Eggplant
KayaButter loved this dish. It tasted like lasagna. Very soft, creamy and chewy. It goes well with the eggplant.
Spanakorizo (Traditional Spinach and Rice)
A decent dish with nothing particular to shout about.
Spanakopita (Spinach Pie)
Greek Chicken Souvlaki
The pita bread is nice. When you bite it, it is soft and it is very inviting thanks to the sour mint sauce filling. And everyone lovesย satayย and definitely you will enjoy this chicken skewer!
Desserts:
Baklava
The look of this pastry is definitely inviting. It is made layers of filo pastry filled with nut and stick together with honey or syrup. Taste-wise, it is rather normal.
Amygdalota (Almond Cookies)
The almond cookies is too hard for our liking. You can dip it into the coffee (provided near the ice cream counter) to soften it and get a better chewing experience. Taste-wise, it is rather normal too.
Galaktoboureko (Greek Custard Pie)
the Greek Custard Pie tasted like butter cake, according to Butter. Nothing special to shout about this dessert also.
All in all, Eastin Hotel Penang definitely took a bold move to introduce Greek cuisine for us. Some might like and some might not like it but take it as a life-time experience. You seldom get to try Greek food. ๐ One thing that you will observe is that, the Greeks love a lot of green food and uses a lot of feta cheese and olive. To us, that’s damn healthy way of living compared to our fried and oily food.
Thank you McKenzie Ho & Calvin Lim for extending the invitation for the food review and all the friendly staffs who served us.
