Uber Has Finally Arrived In Penang & Enjoy Free Uber Rides in Penang!

The wait is over and finally Penangnites can have another option for better transportation. Uber, Everyone’s Private Driver is here to serve you in Penang. I believe many of us have heard of Uber especially those in KL. Founded in 2009, Uber is the largest private driver service provider in the world, serving over 300 cities in 57 countries around the world. 🙂

One thing to note is that the price for your ride is very competitive with Uber. The base fare is RM2 + RM0.35 per minute + RM0.70 per kilometer and the minimum fare is RM3.50 with cancellation fee of RM5. It goes by one pricing the whole day unlike taxis which charges different rates at different times. Uber claims that its rides are 20% cheaper than taxis during the day and 50% cheaper at night. That’s something that Penangnites will welcome as Penangnites are famous for being kiamsiap (A Hokkien term meaning stingy). *quickly finds a place to hide* 🙂

The SOP for Uber private drivers is the driver will need to open the door for you (this I believe will have to depend on the situation and environment of the pick-up area, to be fair to the driver) and provide you with bottled drinking water during your ride. Kaya’s two time experiences with Uber rides did not achieve the SOP. Kaya believes the drivers are still in their learning curve and still getting used to the SOP. If this SOP is executed well, Uber will definitely take up a large share of the market as this SOP will delight the riders. 🙂

Kaya also personally love the ‘Fare Estimator’ function in the app. It lets you roughly know the price so you can manage your expectation well. Regarding about the pickup location, sometimes it will be safer for you to call them in advance in order to confirm your location. This is because sometimes, the location provided by your smartphone’s GPS might not be very accurate. This is very important especially when you are rushing to a place, say, airport, to catch your flight. It is better to be safe than sorry. 🙂 Some very responsible drivers or those drivers with experience of going to the wrong place to pickup riders, they will call you in advanced to confirm the location. 🙂 Oh ya, you can see the Uber car driving towards your pickup location which is rather CUTE! Besides that, you can share you ride to another person and he/she can track your current location and estimated time of arrival. A very well-planned ride experience. Thumbs up to Uber!

There is a rating for the driver based on the feedback from riders who have ridden his/her car before. You will be asked to rate your Uber experience after you have reached your destination.
