This is the stall that Kaya has patronised ever since Kaya is around 10 years old if I am not mistaken. It is very famous among the Georgetown dwellers. Economy char bee hoon which literally translated into fried vermicelli is a dish which some say they will take only when they are very broke yet there are some who really love this dish a lot.

Although it is called as economy char bee hoon, the stall operators will usually mix it with the yellow noodles and some even offer koay teow (a type of flat noodles made of rice). You can easily find this dish around Penang especially in morning markets or night markets (we locals call them as pasar malam, a Malay term).

This famous economy char bee hoon is operated by a tag team of husband and wife when they first started and slowly grow into a few more workers to serve the non-stop customers. The success of this stall, KayaButter believes lies in the ability of the husband to fry large quantity of noodles in a tasty way and full of flavour and also the addition of other sides dishes such as fried popiah, loh bak (five flavour pork roll) and their delicious desserts which are red bean soup and peanut soup.

Char Bee Hoon (Large) RM1.70

In our observation in patronising this stall many times, the large and small version of the dish does not make much difference. KayaButter feel that for the big-eaters, you can try to request for extra extra large to fill your tummies. 😛 KayaButter usually order large in order to have a fulfilling meal. Additional side dishes are a must! Butter loves their crunchy and tasty fried popiah whereas Kaya loves its fragrant and delicious sweet pork rolls.

Red Bean Soup RM1.40

KayaButter usually order this soup to accompany our meals. The red bean soup is the watery version. It is something that KayaButter love. 🙂 Kaya’s mum loves the peanut soup.

Here’s the price list for their dishes which can be found on each table. For those who are unable to understand Mandarin, here’s the translated version:

4th Street Char Bee Hoon

Char Bee Hoon RM1.40 (Small) RM1.70 (Large)

Red Bean Soup RM1.40 (Small) RM1.70 (Large)

Peanut Soup RM1.40 (Small) RM1.70 (Large)

Popiah RM0.80

Loh Bak RM1.40

One thing that KayaButter notice is that the seats and tables are quite limited and you might need to wait for a while in order to get a seat during their peak hours which are somewhere around 6pm-8pm. Another thing is that many of the patrons will park their car near the junction between C.Y. Choy Street and Tye Sin Street which can cause some jam. KayaButter hope that they will park their car at Tye Sin Street which has ample parking spaces. All in all, do give this around 20 years++ stall a try when you are around or you find that there are just too many people at the famous Presgrave Street 888 Hokkien Mee or the locals call them as 3rd Street Hokkien Mee. 🙂
