Eastin Hotel Penang June 2014 Buffet Theme: Around the World in 80 Dishes (1)

For June 2014, Eastin Hotel Penang will be introducing diverse selection of international cuisines from all over the world from China to Mexico under their buffet theme called Around the World in 80 Dishes. The ’80 dishes’ will be spread out over the days as 14 main dishes will selected from one of the 4-5 menus for the day and that does not includes the appetizers, soup and desserts. You will need roughly 5 visits to really taste all the 80 dishes of exotic cuisines from around the world. What KayaButter will be featuring is just a small part of the ’80 dishes’.

Appetizers and Soup

Mexican Avocado Tomato Egg Salad 墨西哥鳄梨番茄蛋沙律

A rather decent salad with nothing special to shout about except it comes with lots of avocado. To me, it is a bit spicy due to large portion of onions used.

German Sauerkrout Salad 德式酸菜沙拉

The actual dish actually uses pork but since Swez Brasserie is halal, they replace it with turkey bacons. The turkey bacon turns out to be a great replacement. It is very flavourful and enhances the salad taste. Do take it together with the salad for the extra kick. 🙂

Vietnamese Fresh Crystal Spring Roll with Shrimp 越南鲜虾水晶春卷

This is one of the highlight of the food review session. Many bloggers cannot stop having this. The skin of the rice flour, salt and water and it is very smooth and QQ (springy). The spring roll itself has little taste and you must dip it into the own made sauce which is rather sweet and spicy. Together with the sauce, the Vietnamese spring roll gives a rather refreshing and light taste.

French Classical Creamy Mushroom Soup 法国经典奶油蘑菇汤

This mushroom soup is cooked using French cooking style which they cook the mushroom and onion, sautéed with butter first. Then only they cook the stock.  That is why the mushroom aroma is very strong. Kaya finds that the pieces of mushroom and onion a bit too many to my liking.

Main Course

Vietnamese Stir Fried Bitter Gourd with Salted Egg Yolk 越南式咸蛋黄炒苦瓜

To enjoy bitter gourd is definitely an acquired taste. Kaya usually challenges myself by eating bitter gourd because I wish to excite my bitter taste buds so that they do not become insensitive with too much of sweetness or sourness. So, whenever there is a chance to eat bitter gourd, Kaya will go ahead. It turns to be quite good. It is not very bitter and the salted egg yolk makes it tastier and much more acceptable. Bitter gourd haters, please give it a try. And beware, it can be a bit spicy because of the chilli used.

Uruguayan Milanesas Napolitana (Breaded Chicken with Tomato and Cheese)

This dish actually originated from Italy but the Uruguayan added tomato sauce, cheese and bacon and make it their own version of milanesas. The chicken is marinated for 1 hour and then pan-fried. After that, it is baked with cheese in the oven. A good technique is needed to prevent the chicken to be too dry. Unlike chicken cordon blue, the cheese is at the outer layer of chicken. It is very crunchy and the chicken is indeed tender.

Portuguese Baked Fish 葡萄牙式烧鱼

This is KayaButter’s favourite. The fish is springy and tender. The gravy is a bit sourish due to the usage of tomato paste but complements well with the overall taste. It invites us to have another bite. 🙂

Mongolian Squid Skewer with Gravy 蒙古式肉汁鱿鱼串烧

This is also another great main course from Eastin Hotel chefs. The squid is well cooked and nice to chew. Not too chewy. Remember to dip into the special sauce which consists of sour plum, oyster sauce, sesame oil, garlic, onion and black pepper.

Spanish Seafood Paella 乌拉圭式鸡肉番茄芝士面包

This is also another highlight of their main course. A very interesting dish which consists of many types of seafood. Seafood lovers will definitely not miss this dish. The stock of this seafood broth is cooked for 4 hours and it is usually prepared 1 day before the cooking. The seafood broth gives a very strong flavour for the rice and the seafood. A sinful yet satisfying meal for seafood lovers.

Desserts

French Crème Brulee, Australian Fruit Trifles & American Rich Chocolate Brownies

The crème brulee’s presentation is rather simple as it is on the spoon. The amount is just nice for a mouthful. Butter loves it a lot. 🙂 The Australian Fruit Trifles is also another interesting dessert with fruits, jelly and custard in a small cup. Kaya loves the American Rich Chocolate Brownies as the chocolate flavour is rich and strong. Butter loves Eastin Hotel’s desserts. There are many interesting desserts and very tasty.

Overall, Eastin Hotel Penang’s Around the World in 80 Days does not disappoint and gives us an opportunity to taste so many famous dishes from all over the world. Special thanks to McKenzie and Calvin for inviting us and hosting us. Your friendly hospitality and warm welcome is very appreciated.
